ABC News 4, Salt Lake City – Story reports that the LDS Church invited ‘Milk’ screenwriter and Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black along with leaders in the local Utah gay community, including Bruce Bastian, Brandie Balken, Jim Dabakis, Michelle Turpin, Valerie Larabee, Jon Jepson, Darcie Goddard, Troy Williams and Trevor Southey, as VIP guests on December 19, 2010, to the Christmas Concert at the Salt Lake Conference Center.

In response to media inquiry, Church representatives issued the statement: “The Church frequently extends invitations to social events to community leaders representing a variety of views, beliefs, and organizations.” Black, who grew up in a Mormon household, spoke to the news station by phone about the invitation, which he called an “extraordinary act of goodwill.” He said that the church and the gay community have started conversations in an effort to find common ground.

A source told ABC 4 News that the LDS church might be willing to conduct outreach including assistance for homeless LGBTQ youths.
