OH I was VERY mad when I first found out. The most pathetic character in “Beauty and the Beast” was going to be the first openly gay character in a Disney movie over the obviously gay candlestick and clock? Gee, thanks! That was the original purpose of this video, but then I actually read the whole interview and I had a slight change of heart. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not thanking Disney for the representation, but it’s clear to me that just a quote or two from Bill Condon does not adequately convey the full situation. While I am still apprehensive (as I am with most new representation), I am also now excited and hopeful.
Things that are important to mention:
I don’t think this is perfect representation, or the representation we deserve
It’s cool that they mentioned Howard Ashman in the feature and everything but really? LeFou is your tribute to him? That’s what you’re going to go with?
Howard Ashman has been dead for nearly 30 years and the fact that Disney is just now getting around to this is messed up
Even if it’s fantastic representation this does not make the other issues with the movie (lack of diversity in the cast) go away
This video isn’t meant to tell you how to feel, it’s to let you know that there is a whole interview you should read and then see how you feel (and if you’re still mad that’s fine)
I don’t think it was a good idea to bring this up before the movie came out. If the moment is as openly gay as you say it is, you shouldn’t have to clarify it
Based on what we know, it sounds like LeFou is going to be given some depth and roundness as a character, (just like how the Prince in Cinderella got a makeover in 2015), and lots of people seem to assume that he’ll just be the exact same sidekick he was in the animated movie
Just because I think LeFou’s arc will probably not be nasty and harmful doesn’t mean it won’t be
I realize that some of my enunciation as well as the actual flow of the argument is a bit messy in places. I wanted to get this out as soon as possible, and it definitely shows. If you have any questions about what I meant or why I brought something up (for example, I mention Ian McKellan being gay because it seems odd to not choose the openly gay man for the openly gay character, especially because Lumiere and Cogsworth have clearly dated), please feel free to ask!
This is where you can read the entire interview (if you buy it) and see what you think for yourself:
Who likes the cool new intro? It looks so legit. Let me know what you think in the comments!
Those things at the end are the new-ish Lego Brickheadz.
