STORYLINE:

Russian police detained dozens of anti-gay protesters and gay rights activists in central Moscow on Saturday.
Tensions flared when opponents tried to interrupt a rally by gay rights activists in the capital.
The demonstration was one of the few gay rights events sanctioned by authorities this year.
In recent years, several attempts to hold gay pride marches in Moscow and other cities were blocked by police or interrupted by Orthodox Church activists and football supporters.
Among those raising objections to the gay rights demonstrations on Saturday were a number of Russian nationalists.
Earlier in the day, they had staged a protest in Moscow against the influx of non-Slavic labour migrants from Russia’s Caucasus and the ex-Soviet republics in Central Asia.
