What’s the Hype About Twitter?

Over the past 10 years Twitter is the social network that everyone is using and everyone just has to have. There are TV commercials about Twitter news and every major radio station; news station, celebrity show and even corporations have a Twitter account. One day does not go by without you hearing about it all over that place. So what is all the hype about Twitter?

Twitter is a social network that is geared toward “micro-blogging. With the advent of texting on cell phones, it is very similar to that except it is done on the Internet. Twitter has developed its own language and people everywhere are quick to learn it and there are even dictionaries throughout the Internet with a long list of terms associated with the language of Twitter. Some of the terms associated with the language are “Tweeps” standing for the people who send out “tweets”, or short text messages not more than 140 characters. This “less is more” concept gets the word out to friends and followers about everything. People send their little text messages regarding everything from what they are doing on that day to Internet marketers sending daily updates about their products and services. Just about any subject you can imagine cab be found on Twitter including inspirational jokes, tips on how to do things, and links to articles that people have written. This levels the playing field for everyone so celebrities, news channels and regular people all have an equal voice. People can even find jobs through Twitter. What an innovative idea, Twitter. It’s so easy to use; anyone at all, young and old, can use it.

Compared to other social media sites, Twitter is just so simple. It doesn’t have lots of bells and whistles and it’s a piece of cake to create and account and follow people with like interests and be followed by the same. A whole new industry has cropped up revolving around Twitter. With all the applications for automating the advertising aspects of Twitter to the ability to create simple networks of friends, share music and videos are all there. There are even applications like Word Press that allow you to link to all of your social network accounts like LinkedIn, FaceBook, MySpace, and others. When you first start out using social media, it can seem daunting, but after you get going, it is somewhat addictive.

To succeed in using Twitter, you just create an account, follow some people you are interested in following and wait for other people to start following you. You posts tweets about your interests and your following just grows from there. You can even do a keyword search to find other people who are interested in the same things. A list of those people pop up and you get to choose which ones you want to follow after viewing their profile. The etiquette in the Twitter community dictates that if you follow someone, they should follow you in return. If you make posts that are interesting and not frivolous, your followers can “retweet” your messages and send you personal direct messages. When you get a message in your home page, it is also seen on the home page of your followers. What a great way to get the word out!

Twitter is the new generation of email. It is an innovative concept that is grabbing the interest of people all over. Some people love it and some people hate it. My suggestion to you is, if you don’t understand what Twitter is all about, just give it a whirl. You will find that it is fun to use, gives you an avenue to communicate with like-minded people all over and, most of all, it’s something you won’t be able to live without once you start.
